It has now been 12 months since Kip McKean left the International Christian Churches (ICC) and joined the Restored Churches Worldwide (RCW). For those who had hoped there would be meaningful reform within the ICC, those hopes have unfortunately been dashed by the latest BBC journalistic investigation, which aired on 23 January 2026.
The story can be watched on YouTube (video below) titled “‘I gave my last 46p’: Young people say they felt pressured by church to donate“, as well as in an article format.
The article reports allegations from former young members of the London and Edinburgh ICCs that they felt pressured to give money and share private financial details, while the churches deny coercion and say giving must be voluntary.
Some of the allegations include the following:
- Several students say they were approached when vulnerable at university and quickly drawn into a tight-knit community they describe as intense “love-bombing.”
- Former members allege they were urged to make regular donations, sometimes from overdrafts or student loans, and that not giving was framed as spiritual failure or “falling back into sin.”
- Some say church members asked them to complete detailed budget planners or even show bank statements, which they experienced as invasive and linked to expectations of higher giving.
For those familiar with the ICC (or similar movements influenced by Kip McKean), this development is hardly surprising. Since the core doctrines of the ICC have largely remained unchanged since Kip’s departure, it is sadly consistent to see the same financial and spiritual abuse continuing within the organisation.
